Abstract:

With the advent of Generative Artificial Intelligence technology has become closer to human intelligence than ever before.  Generative AI has unleashed the next wave of productivity improvement and has caught people’s imagination by automating activities that were long considered the domain of humans, such as, responding to emails and reviewing proposals, and engaging in creative tasks like writing text, composing music, and creating art. Artificial Intelligence has been a field of research since the early 1950s when Alan Turing published his work “Computer Machinery and Intelligence” which defined a measure computer intelligence and ultimately came to be known as the Turing Test. There has been steady development for the next 50 years and then in the last decade Artificial Intelligence has exploded where a series of innovations combined with the massive growth in computing and storage has led to rapid advances in the field leading up to the Generative AI models. Key innovations in the field portends a bright future potential of Artificial Intelligence in the society through higher productivity, improved learning, better quality of life, and better protection of the environment. At the same time, there are dystopian societal threats from the advances in AI that can disrupt society that need to be understood such as relegation of human intellect to superior machines, unemployment of masses due to supplanting of work to machines, misinformation being spread by digital humans, and AI driven lethal military machines that wrest life and death decisions from human and give them to AI machines. In this talk we examine how the future of society might look like as we make advances in Artificial Intelligence.
